How Music Works – Level 2
• heard about modes?
• tried using them?
• why don't they sound good?

This is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspetcs of music for guitarists.
This course will give you a full understanding of major scale modes and how to use them. We'll go into detail about their different sounds and construction, and learn how to apply them on guitar to soloing and writing your own music. Along the way we'll discuss a number of essential concepts that will take your guitar playing to the next level.
This is a small group guitar-focused practical theory class. You will learn music theory relevant to your guitar playing. “Stuff” you can actually use!

Tom Kroons, Howick - Sat 17th November
“I’m always playing the same chord shapes!”
“What’s a G13b9?!”
“I need some more chords for my song-writing.”
“What’s the best way to play this chord in this song?”
This workshop looked at ways of building your chord vocabulary, for jazz and many other styles. We examined some common voicings, how to work out any chord on the guitar and how/when to choose which chords to use in a particular situation.
Feel free to contact me if you'd like the notes from this chord workshop.
"Excellent. Heaps of chords and ideas to work with."
"Excellent clear instruction in a relaxed atmosphere."

Introduction to Jazz Guitar Workshop
Tom Kroon's MusicWorks, Howick - 28 July
Saturday's first workshop at Tom Kroon's was a great success, with 25 jazz guitar students attending. A big thanks to Liz and the team at the shop!
The workshop was intended to help take away some of the fear of starting to play jazz, working from the music itself, rather than being intimidated by the feeling that you have to learn a huge amount of theory etc before you can even begin.
More workshops are planned, please contact me if you'd like to know when the next one is scheduled.
"Awesome! Simple to understand. Practical!"
"Great practical and useful approach to jazz that makes
it much less intimidating."
(Comments from students who attended the workshop)
